LaWanda Johnson is AHPA’s Communications Manager. She is the former Communications Director for the Justice Policy Institute and the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. She was also the Press Secretary for the National Association of People with AIDS, were she oversaw national media campaigns involving people living with HIV/AIDS. Johnson is the co-author of numerous primers on HIV/AIDS-related stigma and leadership development among PWAs in East Africa. A former journalist, she has worked for periodicals focused on advocacy issues in underserved communities for nearly a decade. She has written numerous stories on mandatory minimums, gentrification and land seizure among African Americans. Internationally, Johnson has written about crises in Cote d’ Ivoire, Benin and Nigeria.
